Charming Christchurch
Introduction
The purpose of this document is to provide accurate, up-to-date information to incoming migrants to Christchurch, New Zealand, on a range of topics covering many aspects of life in the city and its environs.
Unfortunately due to two large earthquakes, one in September 2010 and one in February 2011, the city of Christchurch has been severely damaged and many of the old churches and buildings are no longer standing. As the last earthquake was so recent and rebuilding of the city is a long way off, further information on Christchurch will be put on hold for the time being.
Christchurch, the “Garden City”, is the largest city in the South Island and the second-largest city in New Zealand with a multi-cultural society. New Zealand is located in the South Pacific ocean to the east of Australia. New Zealand is also known by the Maori name, Aotearoa, literally translated as “The Land of the Long White Cloud”.
